The distance learning Postgraduate Program in “Special Education” aims to provide specialized knowledge and skills, both at a theoretical and practical level, which are necessary for the effective educational support of students with disabilities and/or special educational needs. The central philosophy of the program is the scientific training of students in the modern principles of inclusive education, with an emphasis on equal access of all students to learning and school life.

Through a strong theoretical, methodological and practical background, postgraduate students are prepared for the timely identification, valid assessment and effective treatment of the needs of students in different educational environments, such as the general classroom, inclusion classes, parallel support and special educational structures. At the same time, they develop skills in planning, implementing and evaluating educational interventions that respond to the individual needs of each student.

Upon completion of their studies, graduates acquire the necessary scientific and professional skills to assume positions of increased responsibility in the field of education and social support. They can work in public and private educational institutions, in organizations and services that provide support to people with disabilities, as well as in structures that promote inclusion and social integration. In addition, the research and methodological training offered by the program provides the appropriate academic background for continuing studies and engaging in scientific research at the doctoral level.

Upon successful completion of the program, students are expected to be able to:

  • Delve into interpretive models of disability, international trends, the modern legislative framework of Special Education and the support structures of school environments.
  • Apply modern approaches and skills to manage complex educational challenges, such as student assessment and collaboration with their families.
  • Conduct a critical analysis of psychopedagogical techniques and methods that enhance student learning, participation and inclusion.
  • Utilize models of collaborative teaching and interdisciplinary collaboration in different educational contexts.
  • Effectively and sensitively apply educational assessment methods to identify needs and design appropriate interventions.
  • Obtain a deep understanding of the diagnostic criteria, causal factors and learning characteristics of children with common disorders, disabilities or learning difficulties.
  • Design, develop and conduct qualitative and quantitative educational research, utilizing modern methods of scientific investigation.
  • Effectively manage mixed-ability classrooms, providing individualized support and collaborating with professionals from different specialties.

The program is specifically designed to meet the needs of a wide range of scientists and professionals. It is primarily aimed at current or future teachers of all levels of general and special education, from preschool and primary to secondary level. At the same time, it is ideal for graduates of pedagogical and other university departments who wish to acquire a strong specialization in the field of Special Education. The program also welcomes professionals from the field of health and social support, such as speech therapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, social workers and nurses, who are involved daily in supporting people with disabilities and their families.
